Thomas Hardy writes solely about misery, sure, but it's wildly varied misery. In this case, some nearby artillery shells RAISE THE DEAD. God has to be like, "Sorry, guys, false alarm. Trust me, if it's the rapture, you'll know about it." And the zombies are like, "Man, this blows. I should've spent my life getting wasted instead of in church."
